Incense Powder – Charcoal Discs – Pack of 10

The essential foundation for burning loose resins, herbs, and incense powders — simply and effectively.

Charcoal discs are the traditional and most effective way to burn loose incense — resins like oliban (frankincense), myrrh, and copal, as well as dried herbs, incense powders, and botanical blends — releasing their full aromatic and energetic potential in a sustained, even burn. This pack contains 10 quick-lighting charcoal discs of 33mm diameter, packaged in a convenient roll. Each disc self-ignites rapidly from the edge, reaches full heat within minutes, and burns steadily for 45 to 60 minutes — giving you ample time for extended meditation, ritual, or simply filling your space with sacred fragrance.

Quantity: 10 discs per pack  |  Diameter: 33 mm  |  Packaging: Roll of 10  |  Burn time: ~45–60 min per disc  |  Type: Quick-lighting charcoal

Always use charcoal discs in a well-ventilated space. Handle with tongs — discs become very hot. Never leave burning material unattended.

What are charcoal discs and why use them? +

Charcoal discs — also called charcoal tablets or hookah coals — are specially formulated discs of compressed charcoal designed to self-ignite quickly and burn at a sustained, even temperature for an extended period. Unlike smudge sticks or incense sticks that burn directly, loose resins and incense powders require an external heat source to vaporise their aromatic compounds — and charcoal discs provide exactly that sustained heat in a safe, controlled form.

The use of charcoal as a vessel for burning sacred resins and herbs is ancient — it has been the primary method for burning frankincense, myrrh, and similar substances in temples, churches, and sacred spaces across the world for thousands of years. The Catholic Church has used charcoal thuribles for frankincense since early Christianity; mosques, Buddhist temples, and Hindu shrines across Asia continue to use charcoal-based incense burning to this day.

The 33mm size is the most widely used and versatile diameter — large enough to hold a generous amount of resin or powder, small enough to fit comfortably in an abalone shell, a clay bowl, or any standard incense burner. These quick-lighting discs are treated with a small amount of potassium nitrate, which allows the edge to catch instantly from a lighter or match and self-ignite across the entire surface within 20–30 seconds.

How to use your charcoal discs — step by step +

Using charcoal discs is simple once you know the process. Follow these steps for a safe, effective, and fragrant experience every time.

What you will need

  • A charcoal disc from this pack
  • A heat-resistant vessel — your abalone shell, a clay or ceramic bowl, or a metal incense burner
  • A small amount of sand, salt, or soil inside your vessel (recommended) to insulate the base from the disc's intense heat
  • Metal tongs or a clip to hold the disc safely while lighting
  • A lighter or long match
  • Your chosen loose resin, incense powder, or dried herb

Step by step

  1. Prepare your vessel. Place a small layer of sand, salt, or fine soil at the base of your abalone shell or bowl. This insulates the vessel from the intense heat of the disc and prevents damage to the shell or surface below.
  2. Pick up the disc with tongs. Never hold a charcoal disc with your fingers while lighting — it heats extremely quickly and will burn skin on contact once ignited. Use metal tongs or a clip at all times.
  3. Light the edge of the disc. Hold a lighter or long match to the outer edge of the disc. Within a few seconds, you will see it begin to spark and fizz — this is normal and indicates the self-ignition process has begun. Hold the flame to the edge for 5–10 seconds to ensure an even start.
  4. Allow the disc to ash over. Place the lit disc in your prepared vessel and wait 1–2 minutes until the entire surface of the disc has turned from black to a glowing grey-white ash. At this point the disc is at full, even heat and ready to use.
  5. Add your resin or incense. Using a small spoon, your fingers, or tongs, place a small amount of loose resin (such as oliban), incense powder, or dried herb directly on top of the glowing disc. Start with a small pinch — a little goes a long way. The heat will immediately begin vaporising the material and releasing its fragrance.
  6. Enjoy and replenish. As the material burns through, add small amounts more as desired. One disc will maintain heat for 45–60 minutes, allowing for a long and sustained aromatic experience.
  7. Extinguish safely. When finished, allow the disc to cool completely in the vessel before touching or disposing of it. Never submerge a hot disc in water — the sudden temperature change can crack ceramics or damage your abalone shell. Allow it to ash out naturally.
What can you burn on charcoal discs? +

Charcoal discs are the ideal burning platform for any loose, natural aromatic material. Here are some of the most popular and widely used options:

Oliban (Frankincense)Sacred resin for spiritual elevation, purification & deep meditation
MyrrhAncient resin for grounding, introspection & emotional depth
CopalMesoamerican resin for cleansing, offering & raising vibration
BenzoinSweet, vanilla-like resin for purification & welcoming energy
Dragon's BloodDeep red resin for protection, intention & amplification
Incense powdersAny loose incense blend — sandalwood, rose, cedar & more
Dried herbsLavender, rose petals, rosemary, mugwort & botanical blends
Sandalwood shavingsRich, grounding wood fragrance for meditation & calm

Always use natural, unprocessed aromatics on charcoal discs. Avoid synthetic fragrance oils, which can release harmful compounds when burned at high temperatures.

Tips for the best experience +
  • Always use in a well-ventilated space — open a window or door before lighting. Charcoal produces carbon monoxide as it burns and should never be used in a completely sealed room.
  • Use sand or salt in your vessel — this is especially important if you are using an abalone shell, which can crack from direct contact with the intense heat of a charcoal disc.
  • Start with a small amount of resin — too much resin on a fully hot disc can produce very dense smoke quickly. Add a little at a time and build to your preferred intensity.
  • Use tongs at all times — a lit charcoal disc reaches temperatures of over 300°C. Always handle with metal tongs, never with bare hands or fabric.
  • Allow the disc to fully ash before adding resin — placing resin on a disc that is still mostly black (not yet fully ashed) will produce acrid smoke. Wait for the full grey-white ash before using.
  • Store unused discs in an airtight container — moisture is the enemy of charcoal discs. Even slight humidity can prevent them from self-igniting properly. Keep the roll sealed between uses.
  • Pair with intention — as with all smudging and incense practices, the quality of your experience is deepened by the clarity of your intention. Take a moment to breathe and set a purpose before lighting.
Storage & care +
  • Store in a cool, dry place in an airtight container or resealable bag. Moisture will prevent the discs from lighting properly.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources when not in use.
  • Allow used discs to cool completely before disposing of them — never in a plastic bin while still warm.
  • Keep out of reach of children and away from flammable materials at all times.
  • Never leave a lit disc unattended.
