Incense Wood – Palo Santo – Peruvian – 50g
Holy wood from the heart of Peru — warm, resinous, and sacred since the time of the Incas.
Palo Santo — literally meaning "holy wood" in Spanish — is one of the most beloved and revered aromatic woods in the world. Sourced from the Bursera graveolens tree of Peru, this 50g bag contains natural pieces of aged palo santo wood, each one carrying the signature fragrance that has made this wood a cornerstone of spiritual practice across South America for centuries. Its scent is unlike anything else — warm, sweet, slightly resinous, with hints of citrus, pine, and frankincense — and its smoke is considered one of the most effective and gentle tools available for space clearing, meditation, and ritual work. Whether you are new to smudging or deepening a long-standing practice, palo santo is the one wood that belongs in every spiritual toolkit.
Due to the natural origin of palo santo, pieces vary in size, shape, and colour. Each bag is 50g of genuine Peruvian palo santo wood. Picture is an example only.
Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) is a tree native to the dry coastal forests of Ecuador, Peru, and across parts of South America. It belongs to the same botanical family as frankincense, myrrh, and copal — three of the world's most ancient and sacred aromatic substances — and shares with them a deep history of ceremonial, spiritual, and ritual use.
The tree has been used by the indigenous peoples of the Andes and Amazonia for thousands of years. When the Inca Empire was founded in the 15th century, local shamans called "Curanderos" used palo santo wood in their rituals, primarily to drive off negative energies and cleanse the land. In pre-Columbian rituals, the wood served as an offering to deities, symbolising gratitude and a request for protection.
What makes palo santo biologically and aromatically extraordinary is its aging process. The most potent aromatic compounds develop only after the tree has completed its natural life cycle. Fallen branches and deadwood age on the forest floor for four to ten years, during which time the heartwood concentrates terpenes — particularly limonene and alpha-terpineol — that give the wood its signature fragrance. This is why ethically sourced palo santo must come only from naturally fallen trees.
Today, Peru is one of the world's primary sources of ceremonial-grade palo santo. By law, palo santo must only come from trees that have died naturally. When you purchase responsibly sourced palo santo, you are participating in a tradition of respect for both the tree and the land it comes from.
Palo santo occupies a unique place in the world of sacred aromatics. Its energy is considered warmer, lighter, and more uplifting than white sage — where sage clears and releases, palo santo simultaneously purifies and invites. It both cleans a space and fills it with positive, welcoming energy in the same breath.
- Purification & space clearing — widely used to clear stagnant, heavy, or negative energy from homes, objects, and the aura.
- Protection — regarded as a powerful protector across Andean and Amazonian traditions. Its smoke creates a field of clear, high-vibrational energy that shields against negative influences.
- Grounding & connection — resonates with the Root Chakra, fostering stability and connection to the earth.
- Creativity & inspiration — associated with awakening creativity, clearing mental fog, and opening the mind to fresh ideas.
- Spiritual elevation — used for centuries as a bridge to the divine. Its rising smoke is seen as a vehicle for prayer, intention, and higher awareness.
- Positive energy invitation — uniquely, palo santo both clears and invites simultaneously — filling a cleansed space with warmth, light, and welcome energy.
Palo santo resonates primarily with the lower and upper chakras simultaneously — grounding the body while elevating the spirit — making it one of the most balanced aromatics for full-system energy work.
Palo santo's deep, resinous warmth grounds and stabilises the root chakra, creating a sense of safety, physical presence, and earthed stillness — the foundation needed for any spiritual work.
Its warm, activating fragrance stimulates personal power, confidence, and clarity of intention — supporting the ability to move forward with purpose and self-assurance.
Like frankincense — its botanical cousin — palo santo opens the crown to higher consciousness, spiritual connection, and elevated states of awareness during meditation and ritual.
Associated with deepening intuition, sharpening inner perception, and opening the mind to subtle guidance during meditation and divination practices.
Palo santo is one of the most forgiving and user-friendly smudging woods available — it lights easily, self-extinguishes naturally, and produces a gentle, manageable amount of smoke.
Before you begin
- Open a window or door to allow energy and smoke to move freely through the space.
- Have your abalone shell or a heat-resistant dish nearby to rest the wood safely.
- Take a slow breath and set a clear intention before lighting.
Step by step
- Light the end of a piece of palo santo. Hold one end and bring a lighter or match to the other tip. Allow it to catch and burn with a small flame for 30–60 seconds.
- Blow out the flame gently. The wood should now smolder and produce a steady, fragrant stream of smoke. Unlike sage, palo santo will naturally extinguish itself after a short time — this is normal. You can relight as many times as needed.
- Rest in the abalone shell. Place the smoldering wood in your abalone shell or a fireproof dish to burn safely between uses.
- Guide the smoke with intention. Carry the shell and move through your space — paying attention to corners, doorways, windows, and any area where energy can feel stagnant.
- Cleanse yourself. Pass the smoke gently around your own body, from feet to head, to clear your personal energy field.
- Close with intention. When your practice feels complete, allow the wood to extinguish naturally in the shell. Take a moment of stillness to acknowledge the shift you have created.
Palo santo pairs beautifully with white sage — use sage first to clear and release, then palo santo to fill the space with warmth, protection, and positive energy.
- Meditation companion — light a piece a few minutes before settling into your practice to fill the room with a grounding, elevating fragrance.
- Crystal cleansing — pass your crystals, oracle cards, or sacred objects through the smoke to clear accumulated energy and reset their vibration.
- On a charcoal disc — shave small pieces of palo santo directly onto a lit charcoal disc for an intense, sustained release of its aromatic compounds.
- Altar placement — leave pieces of the wood on your altar. Set it in a place of honour, and ask the spirit of the wood to cleanse, protect, and uplift the space.
- Yoga & movement practices — burn palo santo before or during yoga or breathwork to deepen presence and elevate the quality of the space.
- Natural fragrance — unburned pieces of palo santo release a subtle fragrance simply by being present in a room, drawer, or bag.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A cloth pouch, wooden box, or sealed bag all work well.
- Never leave smoldering wood unattended. Always rest it in a fireproof vessel.
- Palo santo pieces can be relit many times. The fragrance deepens over multiple uses as the resins continue to develop.
- Keep away from children and flammable materials at all times.
- If a piece goes out during use, simply relight — this is completely normal.
