Purification Replacement – Cinnamon Sticks

Warm, spiced, and ancient — replenish your practice with the scent of protection and abundance.

Cinnamon is one of the oldest and most universally valued aromatic plants in human history — traded along ancient spice routes, burned in sacred temples, and used in purification rituals across Egyptian, Hebrew, Ayurvedic, and folk traditions for thousands of years. This set of three natural cinnamon sticks is the perfect way to replenish your smudging kit or begin incorporating this warm, protective botanical into your practice. Each stick can be burned alone, bundled with other herbs, or simply kept in a space to fill it with its rich, spiced fragrance.

The story of cinnamon +

Cinnamon is one of the world's oldest known spices, with a history stretching back over 4,000 years. It was referenced in Chinese writings as early as 2700 BC, mentioned in the Old Testament, and prized in ancient Egypt where it was used in embalming rituals and offered to the gods. So rare and valuable was cinnamon in the ancient world that it was considered a gift fit for royalty and deities — worth more than gold in some eras of trade.

The word "cinnamon" comes from the Hebrew qinnamon and the Greek kinnamomon. For centuries, Arab traders kept the true source of cinnamon a closely guarded secret to maintain their monopoly, spinning elaborate tales about it being harvested from the nests of enormous birds. It was only when Portuguese explorers reached Sri Lanka in the 16th century that Europe discovered the true origin of the spice — and Sri Lanka remains one of the world's finest producers of true cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) to this day.

In spiritual traditions across Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas, cinnamon has long been associated with warmth, fire, protection, and the amplification of sacred energy. Its smoke was used to consecrate temples, honour the divine, and set powerful intentions.

Spiritual virtues & symbolism +

Cinnamon is considered one of the most energetically active aromatics in the plant kingdom — its warm, fiery nature makes it a natural amplifier and activator in any ritual or sacred space practice.

  • Protection — one of cinnamon's oldest and most widely shared associations across cultures. Its smoke is traditionally used to create a protective boundary around a space, sealing out negative or unwanted energy.
  • Purification — like white sage and frankincense, cinnamon has long been used to cleanse spaces and objects of stagnant energy, particularly at the close of a ritual to "seal in" the cleansing work done.
  • Abundance & prosperity — in many folk and spiritual traditions, burning cinnamon is associated with attracting prosperity, good fortune, and positive flow. It is often used at thresholds — doorways and windows — to invite abundance into a home.
  • Amplification — cinnamon is regarded as an energetic activator that strengthens and magnifies the intention behind any ritual it accompanies. Burn it alongside other herbs to enhance their effect.
  • Warmth & vitality — associated with the fire element, cinnamon carries energies of warmth, passion, drive, and renewed life force — making it an excellent companion for rituals of new beginnings and intention-setting.
  • Spiritual elevation — in several traditions, cinnamon is burned during prayer or meditation to raise the vibrational quality of the space and deepen connection to the sacred.
Chakra associations +

Cinnamon's fiery, warm energy resonates primarily with the lower chakras — the energy centres associated with vitality, action, confidence, and groundedness.

Root Chakra — Muladhara
Cinnamon's grounding warmth anchors and stabilises the root chakra, supporting a sense of safety, physical presence, and connection to the earth.

Sacral Chakra — Svadhisthana
Its fiery energy stirs creativity, passion, and vital life force — awakening the sacral chakra's qualities of joy, expression, and sensory connection.

Solar Plexus Chakra — Manipura
Strongly associated with this chakra of personal power, confidence, and will. Cinnamon's activating energy supports decisiveness, self-assurance, and the courage to move forward with intention.
How to use your cinnamon sticks +

Cinnamon sticks are one of the most versatile tools in a smudging practice — they can be used in multiple ways depending on your intention.

  • Burn directly — hold one end of a cinnamon stick and bring a flame to the other. Allow it to catch, then gently blow out the flame so it smolders and releases its warm, spiced smoke. Rest it in your abalone shell or a heat-resistant dish to burn safely.
  • Bundle with sage or sweetgrass — place a cinnamon stick alongside your white sage or sweetgrass when smudging to add its protective and amplifying energy to the ritual. The combined fragrance is rich and grounding.
  • Seal a ritual — burn cinnamon at the close of a smudging practice to seal and protect the cleansed space, locking in the clarity and positive energy you have invited in.
  • Threshold blessing — smudge doorways, windows, and entryways with cinnamon smoke to invite protection, warmth, and abundance into your home.
  • Place without burning — simply resting a cinnamon stick on an altar, in a bowl, or in a corner of a room releases a gentle, warm fragrance and is considered by many traditions to carry a protective and welcoming energy on its own.
  • Intention setting — hold a stick in both hands, bring a clear intention to mind, and breathe deeply before beginning your ritual. Cinnamon is regarded as an amplifier of intention — the clearer your focus, the more powerfully it works.
Storage & care +
  • Always ensure your cinnamon stick is fully extinguished before storing. Never leave burning material unattended.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve fragrance and potency.
  • Keep in an airtight container or small cloth pouch between uses to maintain their aromatic quality.
  • Cinnamon sticks can be re-used — simply re-light at the next use if they have not burned completely.
