Stone – Opal – Tumbled
A rainbow held in stone — iridescent, ancient, and endlessly alive.
Opal is one of the most magical and visually captivating stones in the mineral kingdom. Its signature play of colour — known as opalescence — shifts and shimmers as the light moves across its surface, revealing flashes of every colour in the spectrum within a single stone. Formed from silica-rich water that slowly settled into rock cavities over millions of years, each tumbled opal is a tiny world unto itself, unique in its pattern, colour, and light. Revered by ancient civilisations across every continent, opal has carried meanings of hope, purity, creativity, and transformation for thousands of years. One crystal will be carefully hand-selected for you.
- Small: 3g – 10g each
- Medium: 11g – 19g each
- Large: 20g – 35g each
Due to the inherent nature of natural crystals, size and colour vary from piece to piece. The picture shown is an example only. One crystal will be carefully selected for you.
Opal's name traces back to the Sanskrit word upala, meaning "precious stone," and later the Greek opallios, meaning "of changing colour." That shifting, iridescent quality — opalescence — is the result of millions of tiny silica spheres arranged in a precise grid within the stone's structure. As light passes through these microscopic layers, it diffracts into every colour of the spectrum, producing the dazzling internal fire that makes opal unlike any other stone on earth.
Opal has been mined and prized for over 10,000 years. Objects decorated with Ethiopian opal were discovered in a cave in Kenya and dated to 4,000 BC. The ancient Greeks associated opal with prophecy and foresight, believing it granted the power of prediction. To the Romans, it was the most powerful and valuable of all gemstones — said to contain within it the colours of every other gem. Aboriginal Australians called opal the "rainbow serpent stone," believing it was a sacred gift from the creator who descended to earth on a rainbow. Arab cultures believed opals fell from the sky during thunderstorms, filled with lightning. Today, Australia produces approximately 95% of the world's opal supply.
Each tumbled opal has been gently polished to reveal its smooth, rounded form — making it ideal to hold, carry, place on an altar, or use in meditation and energy work.
Opal is widely regarded as a stone of light, creativity, hope, and emotional transformation. Because it contains within it every colour of the spectrum, many traditions consider it a stone that carries the virtues of all gems — a kind of universal amplifier of energy and intention. Its highly reflective nature is often described as mirror-like: it is said to reflect back what you bring to it, amplifying positive intentions and encouraging honest self-reflection.
- Creativity & inspiration — long associated with artistic vision, creative thinking, and the spark of new ideas. It is regarded as a stone that awakens imagination and opens the mind to fresh possibilities.
- Hope & optimism — one of the oldest symbolic associations of opal. Its light-filled nature is seen as a representation of renewed possibility and positive energy.
- Emotional expression & release — associated with helping to bring repressed feelings gently to the surface, supporting the process of acknowledging emotions and moving through them with greater ease.
- Amplification — like quartz, opal is considered an amplifier — of thoughts, intentions, and the energy of other stones it is placed alongside.
- Intuition & inner vision — strongly linked to the deepening of intuition, psychic awareness, and the ability to perceive beyond the surface of situations.
- Protection — across multiple traditions, opal has been worn as a protective talisman, believed to shield the aura and absorb negative energies before they reach the wearer.
- Transformation — opal's ever-shifting colours are seen as a metaphor for personal transformation — the capacity to hold many dimensions of the self and to evolve continuously.
Opal is unique among stones in that it resonates with multiple chakras — its specific associations vary according to its colour. Because it contains the full spectrum of light, it is sometimes described as a stone that can work with the entire chakra system simultaneously.
White and common opals are primarily linked to this chakra — stimulating spiritual awareness, higher consciousness, and a sense of connection to universal energy.
Opal's reflective and intuitive qualities make it a natural ally for the third eye — deepening inner vision, strengthening intuition, and expanding perception.
Opal has a strong connection to the heart, associated with love, compassion, emotional openness, and the courage to express authentic feeling.
Fire and orange-toned opals are linked to this chakra — awakening creativity, passion, joy, and vital life energy.
Blue and water opals resonate here, supporting clear communication, authentic self-expression, and honest connection with others.
Because each opal is unique in its colour patterning, the chakra it resonates most strongly with may vary from stone to stone. Trust your intuition when choosing yours.
- Meditation — hold your opal in the palm of your hand or place it on the chakra you wish to work with. Close your eyes and visualise its shifting light filling your energy field with clarity and creativity.
- Intention setting — opal is a natural amplifier. Hold it while setting an intention and allow it to carry and magnify that energy throughout your day.
- Altar or sacred space — place your tumbled opal on an altar, windowsill, or any space where you want to invite light, inspiration, and elevated energy.
- Pocket stone — carry your opal with you throughout the day as a personal talisman — a small reminder of clarity, hope, and creative possibility.
- Crystal grids — opal's amplifying qualities make it an excellent addition to any crystal grid, enhancing the energy of the surrounding stones.
- Dream work — some traditions place opal under the pillow or on the bedside table to encourage vivid, meaningful dreams and deeper access to inner wisdom.
Opal requires gentle care during cleansing due to its high water content (up to 20%) and relatively soft structure. Avoid harsh or prolonged cleansing methods.
- Distilled water — the recommended method. A brief, gentle rinse with distilled water is safe and effective. Avoid tap water with minerals that can affect the stone's surface. Pat dry immediately — never soak.
- Moonlight ✦ — the preferred energetic recharge for opal. Place on a windowsill or outdoors under a full moon overnight. The soft lunar energy cleanses and revitalises without any risk to the stone.
- Smoke cleansing — pass through the smoke of white sage, palo santo, or cedar. Ideal as it causes no physical contact or moisture.
- Selenite — place on or beside a selenite charging plate overnight to clear and restore the stone's energy field.
- Sound — the vibrations of a singing bowl or bell cleanse and re-energise without touching the stone.
- Avoid: prolonged soaking, salt water, harsh sunlight (UV can dry out and crack opal over time), and abrasive materials.
- Handle with care — opal has a hardness of 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale and can scratch or chip if knocked against harder surfaces.
- Never soak in water — opal contains water within its structure and can crack if it dries out too quickly after prolonged soaking.
- Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight, which can dry out and crack the stone over time.
- Store separately from harder gemstones to avoid scratching.
- Avoid perfumes, lotions, and harsh chemicals.
- Store in a soft pouch or padded box when not in use.
